March 1, 2010 Have you ever seen such a snowy winter in this area? We almost feel like we’re living in Alaska! Despite the mountains of snow around our parking lot, we’ve been open most days. If you want to make sure we’re there before you visit, please give us a call at 540-338-6636. We have managed to acquire a few interesting pieces this month. One is a nanny’s bench or mammy’s bench. These were probably first created between1810 and 1820, but the one we have dates from 1850’s. They are most often an arrowback or rodback style with the cradle side removable, so that the piece can be used as a settee. The nanny’s bench is ideal for keeping an infant with the nanny, while allowing her to use her hands for other efforts such as mending or shelling peas. Our bench’s measurements are 66”L x 17” W x 30” H.
Another unique piece added to our inventory this month is a baker’s table with two flour bins also called hog-belly drawers. This is a sturdy piece measuring 42”L x 25 ½” W x 29 3/4“ H , It has been used as an island in a kitchen that did not include one. It could also be used as a storage piece for toys or in a sewing room. There are many possibilities!
Wehave no special hours for the month of March. If we don’t see you before then, have a Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Our son—and part-time helper at the store—will be dancing at the Irish Dance World Championships in Glasgow,Scotland at the end of the month, so please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
